My Memorable Pregnancy Journey: Triumphs & Challenges | A Year of Transformation
It's been quite some time since I've been reflecting on this significant chapter of my life – my pregnancy journey. Spanning a year, this has been a rollercoaster of emotions, marked by remarkable changes in my body. I've always been the type of person who rarely experienced nausea or vomiting, even in the most challenging situations. However, during pregnancy, the smallest scent could trigger a sudden bout of nausea. I vividly remember an incident during my third month of pregnancy when I was working in Tiruvannamalai.
It was an ordinary evening after work, and my husband had come for the weekend. We decided to explore a local restaurant, and this outing turned out to be an unforgettable experience. We eagerly ordered a plate of biryani, and as I took the first mouthful, an overwhelming urge to vomit engulfed me. Without warning, I regurgitated my meal right onto my plate, right there in public. I felt embarrassed and mortified. The nausea didn't subside; it persisted throughout the journey from the restaurant back home. It left such an indelible impression on me that I resolved never to dine out during the rest of my pregnancy.
Let's rewind to the beginning, to the first month of my pregnancy journey:
First Month: Unveiling the Unexpected Pregnancy
Back in January, I had no inkling of my pregnancy when I started my new job in Tiruvannamalai. In fact, it wasn't until the end of March that I finally realized I was pregnant. February came and went without any specific dates marked, so we decided to wait until March to take a pregnancy test. Unbeknownst to me, this was just the start of an incredible journey.
Second Month: The Waiting Game
By my second month, my menstruation cycle had become irregular, causing me to wonder if something was amiss. I resisted the urge to take a pregnancy test too soon, deciding to wait for at least 15 days after my missed period. Dizziness had become a regular companion, and I often felt unsteady on my feet. It was as if my body was subtly signaling the transformation taking place within me. I sought advice from family doctors and consulted with my brother, who happened to be a doctor. They recommended waiting for 40 days from the last menstrual cycle. A pivotal moment arrived when my whole family gathered on a Sunday, including my parents, husband, brother, and mother-in-law. We decided to take the test, and the result was joyously positive, filling our hearts with happiness. From that moment on, we began adhering to a list of dos and don'ts to ensure a healthy pregnancy.
Third Month: A Glimpse into Motherhood During Pregnancy
During the third month, I embarked on my first visit to the hospital, eager to witness the miraculous formation of my baby in the womb. However, our enthusiasm was met with a challenge - the hospital's policy allowed only two persons to accompany the expectant mother. Despite this, we managed to conduct necessary tests, including checking my haemoglobin levels. The test results brought relief as they all came back normal. This marked a significant month in my pregnancy as I began experiencing heightened sensitivity to various smells, often leading to bouts of vomiting. As my pregnancy journey continued, I encountered not only personal challenges but also extraordinary moments of wonder, like the breathtaking solar eclipse I witnessed during this time. Fourth Month: A Growing Appetite and Unusual Pregnancy Cravings
As the days rolled on, my dizziness intensified, and my appetite grew voracious. I found myself constantly craving various foods, particularly those prepared by my mother, like her delicious kolukattai and sambar rice. Curiously, I never craved chocolates or store-bought treats, but rather, I longed for homemade comfort foods. Rice emerged as my primary source of solace, providing relief from the persistent hunger pangs. Despite my increased food intake - six meals a day or more - I noticed an intriguing pattern. Each meal filled me up quickly, prompting me to close my lunchbox after consuming a specific quantity, a routine that continued throughout the month. Pomegranates became my favourite snack, and I always carried a backpack filled with an assortment of food and snacks.

📖 Read My Book on AmazonUp until this point, I had managed to keep my pregnancy a secret from everyone except my senior at work. Physically, there were no visible signs of my condition, and I continued to navigate my daily life discreetly. During this time, my mother-in-law's family arranged a traditional 'poo mudikara' function, adorning me with flowers and traditional accessories. It was during this period that I experienced the first subtle movements of my baby, a moment of pure magic. Feeling a tiny hand gently brushing against my stomach filled me with inexplicable joy. However, the joys of pregnancy came with their own set of challenges, such as increasing backaches and heightened sensitivity to various scents, making it difficult to tolerate certain odours. My stamina dwindled, and even standing for extended periods became a struggle.
Sixth Month: A Time of Physical and Emotional Challenges
The sixth month brought with it a new set of hurdles. My physical discomfort escalated, accompanied by frequent mood swings. Loneliness crept in, intensifying the need for my husband's presence. Simple remarks from my superiors began to feel harsh, and patience wore thin. Long walks became an ordeal, and I recall one particularly difficult night. I awoke suddenly around midnight, crying out in agony due to severe back pain. Turning and shifting were nearly impossible tasks. After sipping on some jeera water, I found relief. The unwavering support of my mother-in-law and husband during this period remains etched in my memory. Nights were no longer peaceful; frequent trips to the restroom left me sleep-deprived, and I often dozed off at the office.
Seventh Month: Conversations with My Unborn Child
As my belly began to protrude, my baby's movements grew more pronounced. The appearance of stretch marks served as a visual testament to my body's ongoing transformation. My stomach felt as though it might burst at any moment. White lines, a reminder of my body's incredible journey, adorned my skin. It was during this time that I started talking to my unborn child, marvelling at the remarkable connection we shared. I couldn't help but wonder if my baby could hear me or understand my words. To test this, I asked my baby to move a leg if he could hear me. What happened next was nothing short of miraculous. As soon as I placed my hand on my stomach, my baby moved his leg right into the centre of my palm, as if acknowledging my presence. The connection was undeniable, and it was a profoundly moving moment. My baby seemed to comprehend every word I uttered, and it filled my heart with love and anticipation. While back pain continued to plague me, I resolved to divert my attention by indulging in books and literature.
Eighth Month: The Ongoing Battle with Back Pain in Late Pregnancy
Back pain remained a constant companion during the eighth month. It seemed to intensify with each passing day, making even the simplest tasks a challenge. Sleep became elusive without the comforting warmth of a hot water bag. Despite these physical discomforts, I persevered, determined to embrace the final stretch of my pregnancy journey. A significant event awaited - the baby shower.
