The Power of Language: A Reflection on Respect and Communication

In a diverse country like India, the significance of language is undeniable. Each state boasts its unique culture, and the language spoken holds a special place in people's hearts. It's a fact that when you speak in a state's native language, you experience a level of respect and comfort that's hard to replicate in any other tongue.

When I first arrived in Bangalore, like many others, I was confined to my mother tongue. The thought of communicating in a language other than my own was daunting. However, as time went on, I discovered that sweetness and warmth exist in all languages, and linguistic barriers need not define our interactions.

Language alone does not determine a person's character, but a movie I watched recently reminded me of the initial challenges I faced in Bangalore. Some individuals will only engage with you when you converse in their native tongue. The movie beautifully captured the sentiment of a person stating, "We provided them with sustenance, shelter, and even learned their language, yet we received no respect, only derogatory treatment and labels."

Communication, regardless of language, serves as a means to convey thoughts and emotions. While English is often seen as a universal language, it should never be a source of arrogance or discrimination.

Inhabitants of a region should make an effort to learn the local language as a gesture of goodwill, even if it's not their preference. Learning is a personal choice, but respecting all languages and individuals, regardless of their linguistic abilities, is a fundamental principle. Every person is human, deserving of dignity and respect, regardless of the language they speak or the work they do.

The respect we extend to others today is the respect we will receive tomorrow. Before taking any action that may affect someone, it's essential to empathize and consider their perspective.
