Introduction:

A year ago, I wrote about the relief of returning to my hometown from the bustling streets of Bangalore amidst the initial chaos of the pandemic. Little did we know then how profoundly COVID-19 would reshape our lives.

The Masked Lifestyle:

Today, masks have become an integral part of our existence. They're not a fashion statement but a necessity. In a world where physical interactions have dwindled, phone calls have replaced face-to-face conversations. Meeting people in person has become a rarity.

A Swift Transformation:

In early 2020, masks were scarce, and I remember pondering why people in the Korean series wore them – pollution, my brother explained. Just a year later, masks went from elusive to ubiquitous.

The New Neighbors:

The changes have hit home as new neighbours moved in next door. I, once the social butterfly of my Bangalore paying guest accommodation, now find myself retreating indoors when noticed.

Double Masking and Fear:

We've progressed from matching masks with outfits to wearing double masks. The fear of COVID-19 has gripped us, especially the dread of a potential second wave.

The Impact on Socializing:

The pandemic has altered the essence of socializing. Visiting unwell friends is a thing of the past. Any hint of symptoms, no matter how minor, keeps us away. The virtual world has swallowed our everyday reality.

A World Without Humanity?

In this transformed landscape, humanity seems to have taken a backseat. We've stopped visiting those we care about when they're unwell. Medicine profiteering in the black market has shaken our faith in compassion.

A Silver Lining:

Yet, amid the chaos, there's a silver lining. The pandemic has brought families closer, rekindling bonds. It has also strengthened ties with relatives. But the constant spectre of death, the panic it breeds, reminds us of our vulnerability.

A Wish for a Better Tomorrow:

As we navigate this challenging terrain, we yearn for a world free of COVID-19, where humanity prevails, and life can return to some semblance of normalcy. We hope for the pandemic's swift departure, leaving the remaining survivors to heal and rebuild.
