In recent times, I find myself reminiscing about the past. I vividly recall the days when I was a carefree child, amused by the sight of water packets. It's astonishing how my perspective has shifted since then. Back then, I purchased a water packet for the first time, despite having a water source near my home. It was simply to explore its taste. Fast forward to today, the water business has skyrocketed, with numerous companies delivering water right to our doorsteps. RO purifiers have become a household staple, purging minerals from water and packaging them as "mineral water" while turning minerals into convenient tablets. We never envisioned a world where we couldn't live without this purified water, but it has become our reality.

I fondly remember the days when I used to admire the lush trees lining Pollachi Road on my way to college. However, in 2018, after my graduation, the landscape changed drastically, with countless trees being cut down. I couldn't help but miss those trees on my return to college for graduation day.

As the number of trees dwindled, the population grew. The oxygen that was once freely provided by trees is now sold in cylinders. Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, oxygen, a necessity for treatment, came with a price tag due to GST. We've transitioned from a time when we paid minimal taxes for everyday activities like eating, sleeping, walking, and shopping, to 2021, where taxation has become pervasive. Now, we pay taxes on everything from fruit to household decor.

The current COVID-19 crisis has exacerbated the situation, with people suffering from oxygen shortages. Oxygen supply has become a costly affair, with hospitals receiving regular shipments of oxygen cylinders. It's a fear that these oxygen cylinders may become commonplace in the future.

Another notable change is the taste of green bananas. In my youth, I relished the unique taste of green bananas, shunning the yellow ones. I distinctly recall mocking the shorter yellow bananas in comparison to their green counterparts. However, today, it's the hybrid varieties that have become the norm, leading to nutritional deficiencies. We've become reliant on protein shakes for bodybuilding and vitamin tablets for essential nutrients, leaving us to question the purpose of regular food.

Vitamins and minerals have shifted from our plates to medicine bottles. Some of my friends have incorporated vitamin and mineral tablets into their daily post-lunch routines. It begs the question: What is the true role of food in our lives?

In light of these changes, it's worth considering a return to a more sustainable way of life. Planting trees at home and growing our own vegetables can provide us with natural oxygen, vitamins, and minerals. Let's advocate for #PlantingTrees, #SayNoToHybrids, and #PromoteHomePlantation to secure a healthier future for ourselves and the planet.
